Below is a message from Josh. Many of you may have participated in the Giving Thanks Tournament I hosted years ago for Josh at Borderland. He has been hanging in there, but things have not been going well and he is truly struggling right now and has an opportunity for treatment, but it is in the UK and funds are very limited. I know this is fairly long, but please take the time to read what he said. I can't even imagine his life for the past 10 years. And THANK YOU!!!

"Due to chronic infection, prolonged exposure to and accumulation of toxins (mostly from toxic mold), and lots of antibiotic use in my past, every meal I eat - for more than 10 years now - has been not only extremely unpleasant but also quite literally disabling. Any time I ingest something, a massive inflammatory cascade is unleashed that has profound wide-ranging effects.
For 2-3 hours after eating, I become extremely sound and light sensitive, I can't read or talk without experiencing profound pain, and I absolutely, positively have to remain seated, because if I don't, all these symptoms will become dramatically worse, as will the nausea etc that accompanies eating in nearly every instance.
These symptoms are evoked by literally every food, and at this point the response evoked by literally every food but two (plain roast chicken and white rice for over 2 yrs now) is so acute as to be bearable.
I have also been unable to tolerate nearly every oral medication or supplement prescribed or recommended, making it extraordinarily difficult to address the underlying causes of my problems, give myself symptomatic relief or just get the vitamins, minerals etc. into me that I need in order to keep me going.
Nor can I at this point (yes, I have gotten progressively worse) ingest any fluid whatsoever without becoming extremely nauseous and experiencing all of the other symptoms I have described. As a consequence, I have had to rely solely on IV saline (via a catheter placed in my arm) to get sufficient fluids into my body for the past few years.
There is an underlying nervous and immune system dysfunction that has been caused by the toxins and infections, but I am so much more dysfunctional during meals and for those couple/few hours afterwards than I am the rest of the day that there simply is no comparison.
I have discussed these problems with endless doctors (conventional, integrative and non-traditional), done endless tests, and tried endless treatments for north of 10 years now and yet find myself in the place I've described.
The consensus is that the infections, toxins and many years of antibiotics have profoundly altered - or to be more specific, dramatically reduced - the amount and diversity of beneficial bacteria in my gut and that this deficit/imbalance is likely causing not only a lot of gastrointestinal dysfunction but probably a good portion of the inflammation that underlies the various symptoms I have described.
This community of bacteria and other microbes is called the microbiome, and the scientific/medical community has concluded that a robust and diverse microbiome is critically important for proper digestion and absorption.
It has also become quite clear to researchers that, independent of its effects on nutritional status, the microbiome's composition has a substantial impact - basically via the nervous, endocrine and immune systems - on the functioning of our body in seemingly just about every other regard.
This is why we expect that restoring my microbiome would likely have a substantial effect on the systemic inflammation driving my various symptoms, and this is why, in addition, we would expect my immune system to be better able to eliminate whatever residual infection may be present in my body at this point.
Note also that, to the extent I became better able to tolerate what I put in mouth, I would be better able to tolerate not only food and fluids but the oral medications and supplements that could help rid my body of infection and toxins and offer badly-needed additional symptomatic relief.
Unfortunately, it does not appear at this point, according to the research, that probiotics can actually reseed the gut to any meaningful extent, and I have been unable to tolerate them in any case.
It does, however, appear that a procedure called FMT, which entails essentially isolating the beneficial bacteria of a healthy person and transferring it to the gut of someone like me, helps more often than not, often lastingly and significantly.
As there are appear to be no other untried interventions available to us at this point, my gastroenterologists are of course advocating giving this a try.
The procedure was recently cleared by the FDA, but only as a treatment for one particular condition, one which I do not have.
Of course, black market options are available, but they are risky and actually more costly in an apples-to-apples comparison than the alternative.
That alternative is to go to a clinic in the UK - where the laws permit this procedure to be used in cases like mine - that specializes in and has been doing this procedure for many years.
The money we are hoping to raise would help pay for the cost of the procedure there, as well as for the associated lodging and travel."

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope to see you at Roc Run for an amazing day!!
